Sometime back, I saw an advertisement in Tamilnadu. The tag line of the advertisement became a catchphrase and it said, in essence: “There is no life without belief.”
For a Christian, faith is life. The righteous will live by his faith. – Habakkuk 2:4. That faith is the surety of hope, belief that we have. If we look at the definition of “faith” in the dictionaries, the Oxford Dictionary defines it as “A strongly held belief”, while the Merriam-Webster defines it as “a firm belief in something for which there is no proof.” The Bible says
Now faith is, being sure of what we hope for, and certain of what we do not see. – Hebrews 11:1
Everyone of us have faith and everyone of us have certain beliefs and hopes. I am not talking about Christian faith or belief here. But all of us have certain amount of faith and certain beliefs and hopes.
Let me explain that with an example. We read a news that a bus was driven by a drunken driver and it got into an accident, resulting in severe casualties. However, when you get into a bus next time, do you check to see if your driver is drunken? No. Why? Because you believe that this driver is not a drunkard. Okay. Now the bus is moving and do you stay away, looking at the road with fear? No. You put on some music and take a nice nap. Why? Because you have a surety of hope, a strong belief, that is faith and hence you are able to sleep.
You may ask, but what about those who commit suicide after losing all hopes and faith? Yes, they also have certain hopes and faith. What do they believe in? They believe that they have reached the end of road. They firmly believe that death alone can solve their problem; that suicide alone can lessen their pain. They have a strong faith that nothing good can happen in their life anymore. They have a strong faith that in their future, there is no joy, no peace and no happiness. Have they seen their future? No, they have not. They are so certain about it. That is why the Bible says “Faith is certain of what we do not see.”
I believe that two things will be clear from this.
- We all have beliefs, hope and faith.
- Wrong beliefs and faith can take one’s life away.
Today, ask yourself this question. Who do you believe? On what, you have your faith? Let us have our faith on Jesus Christ, Who loved us and gave up His life for us. Let us believe on the Good Shepherd, Who came so that we may have life and we may have it abundantly.
