Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father’s will (Mat_10:29 RSV).
We worry too much. We follow the example of our earthly father Adam when he confessed to God, “I was afraid…and hid” (Gen_3:10). We have become a fearful people, even though most of our fears are often unfounded or just plain silly, because we do not have our eyes on the sparrow.
One of the renderings for the term sparrow in Hebrew referred to small birds, and in Matthew the word probably refers to a small house sparrow. The birds were well known in Syria; they were small, tame and found everywhere. Because of their great number they were sold cheaply; five would go for one and one-half cents. The idea is that if God cares for something so inexpensive and small, then certainly He will care for and protect us!
Jesus always gives us the assurance, “I am with you always” (Mat_28:20). Yet we continue to be afraid: Nuclear war, loss of health, serious accident, job loss, and a thousand other things.
The lesson of 1Jo_4:18, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear,” should teach us something: that either we do not love God as we should, or we do not believe Him when He says that He loves us. Think about the following:
“Worry comes through human interference with the divine plan.”
“You cannot change the past, but you ruin a perfectly good present by worrying about the future.”
“Why worry when you can pray?”
“Worry is interest paid on trouble before it is due.”

The story is told of the ship that was trapped in a severe storm at sea. All were preparing to abandon ship, all except one young lady who was playing with her dolls. When asked if she were not afraid, she calmly replied, “No, because my father is the captain.”
When the storms of life seem to trap us, let us learn to keep our eyes upon the sparrow and to say, “I am not afraid because the Captain is my Father!”

வெளிச்சம் தேவை

சில நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு ஒரு வீட்டின் முன்னே, சூரிய வெளிச்சம் படும்படியான இடத்தில் இருந்த ஒரு மரம், பெரிய அழகான, அருமையான மொட்டுக்களை விட்டிருந்ததை நாங்கள் கண்டோம். பார்க்கும்போதே கன்களுக்குக் குளிர்ச்சியாய், மனதுக்கு இதமாய் இருந்தது. ஆனால் அதே மரத்தின் சில கிளைகள் வீட்டின் கூரையின் நிழலில் சூரிய வெளிச்சம் அதிகம் படாத இடங்களில் வளர்ந்தது. அங்கேயிருந்த பூக்களோ வாடிப்போய், வதங்கிப் போய் இருந்தது. அந்த பூக்களைப் பார்க்கும்போதே, அவைகள் நல்ல பழங்களைக் கொடுக்காது என்று எங்களுக்குத் தெரிந்தது. ஒரே வேரும், ஒரே அடிமரமும் இருந்தாலும், ஏன் இந்த வித்தியாசம்? அநேக கிளைகள் தினமும் சூரிய வெளிச்சத்தில் பிரகாசமடைந்தது. சில கிளைகளோ நிழலில் இருந்து கெட்டுப்போயின.

நம்முடைய குணாதிசயங்களும் கூட தேவையான வெளிச்சம் இல்லாமல் போனால், கெட்டுப் போகும். நாம் ஆவியின் கனியைத் தரவேண்டும் என்றால், தினந்தோறும் வேத வெளிச்சத்தில் வளரவேண்டும். இருண்ட இடத்தில், வேத வெளிச்சத்தில் வளராத கிளைகள் பயனற்ற கனிகளைத் தான் தரும்: பெலவீனங்கள், உபதேச குழப்பங்கள், வாழ்க்கையில் தேவனுடைய வழிநடத்துதல் இல்லாமல் அலைவது, நடைமுறை வாழ்க்கையில் ஒரு ஜெயம் இல்லாமல் இருப்பது, மற்றும் நம்முடைய நடத்தையில் சாட்சி இல்லாமல் இருப்பது போன்றவை வரும். ஆகவே நல்ல கனிகளை, அதினதின் காலத்தில் நாம் நேர்த்தியாக கொடுக்கும்படி, நம்முடைய முழு வாழ்க்கையையும், தேவனுடைய வேதத்தின் வெளிச்சத்திலும், நம்முடைய கர்த்தராகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் முகப்பிரகாசத்திலும், ஒன்றும் மறைக்காமல் விவரித்து வாழ்வோமாக.

Fruit needs light!

Some time ago we noticed that a tree planted at the sunny end of a house had large and beautiful blossoms. It was a feast to the eyes; but what an amazing difference in some of the branches trained round the corner of the house where they got much less sun. The blossoms were starved and drooping, and there was little promise of fruit. They had the same root and stem in common, but while one part of the tree was in the full glorious light, the other branches were in the shade.
Our character is affected in the same way by insufficient enlightenment. The dark places produce unfruitful branches: strange weaknesses, distortions, immaturities, indirection, failures in practical life and conduct. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance” (Galatians 5:22-23). If we are to bear all manner of precious fruit, each in its rightful season, we must trustfully and joyfully lay open our whole soul to the full expanse of God’s light shining in the face of Jesus Christ.

கதவை மூடு

ஒரு மனிதன் ஒரு முறை தன் நண்பனுக்கு டெலிபோன் செய்ய, ரோட்டோரம் இருந்த ஒரு டெலிபோன் பூத்துக்குள் போய், போன் செய்தான். அவன் நண்பன் போனை எடுத்தான், ஆனால் அவனுக்கு ரோட்டில் செல்லும் வாகனங்களின் இரைச்சல் மாத்திரமே கேட்டது. “சத்தமாய்ப் பேசு, நீ பேசுறது கேக்கவே இல்ல’’ என்று சொல்லிப் பார்த்தும் பயனில்லை. கடைசியில், அந்த நண்பன் சொன்னான்: “கதவை மூடு, அப்போது தான் நீ பேசுவது எனக்கும், நான் பேசுவது உனக்கும் கேட்கும்” என்று.

ஆம், தேவனின் சத்தத்தை நாம் கேட்கவேண்டுமானால், வெளியுலகத்திற்கு நாம் கதவை மூட வேண்டும். அப்படி செய்தால், நம் வாழ்க்கை மாறும்; நம் ஜெபங்கள் வல்லமையுள்ளதாக இருக்கும். அப்போது மீண்டும் வெளியுலகத்திற்கு போகும்போது, உலகம் சொல்வதை நாம் கேட்பது மாத்திரம் அல்ல, அந்த உலகத்திற்கு சொல்ல, நம்மிடத்தில் theஎவன் தந்த வார்த்தை இருக்கும்.

நீயோ ஜெபம்பண்ணும்போது, உன் அறைவீட்டுக்குள் பிரவேசித்து, உன் கதவைப் பூட்டி, அந்தரங்கத்திலிருக்கிற உன் பிதாவை நோக்கி ஜெபம்பண்ணு; அப்பொழுது அந்தரங்கத்தில்பார்க்கிற உன் பிதா வெளியரங்கமாய் உனக்குப் பலனளிப்பார். – மத்தேயு 6:6

Shut the door!

A man went inside a telephone booth and dialled the number of a friend. When the connection was made, the friend kept saying, “I can’t hear you; speak louder; I can’t hear you.” All he cold hear was the roar of traffic in the background. “Shut the door so I can hear,” he said to the caller. In order to hear God’s voice speaking to you, you’ve got to shut the door to the outside world so that its enticements won’t distract you. Doing this could change your whole life. Then when you go back into the crowd, you’ll not only be able to listen to what the world has to say, but you’ll have something to say to the world that you’ve personally heard from God.

But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
– Matthew 6:6

என் இருதயத்தின் வேண்டுதல்கள்

கர்த்தரிடத்தில் மனமகிழ்ச்சியாயிரு; அவர் உன் இருதயத்தின் வேண்டுதல்களை உனக்கு அருள்செய்வார். – சங்கீதம் 37:4

என் இருதயமே, ஏன் சோர்ந்து போயிருக்கிறாய்? எதிர்காலத்தைக் குறித்த பயங்கள் உன்னை வாட்டிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறதோ? இல்லை, உன் ஆழத்தில் ஒருவேளை கர்த்தர் எனக்கு சொன்னதை எல்லாம் செய்யாமல் போய்விடுவாரோ என்ற அவிசுவாசம் உன்னோடு போராடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறதோ? உன் இருதயத்தின் வேண்டுதல்கள் உனக்கு கிடைக்குமோ, கிடைக்காதோ என்ற போராட்டமோ?

ஓ என் இருதயமே, இந்த உன் அவிசுவாசங்களின் நடுவிலும், உன் கேள்விகளின் நடுவிலும், நீ விசுவாசித்து ஆராதிக்கிற தேவன் ஒருவராய் பெரிய அதிசயங்களைச் செய்கிறவர் என்று நீ அறிந்திருக்கிறாய்.  அவர் வார்த்தையில் உண்மையுள்ளவர் என்று நீ அறிந்திருக்கிறாய். நீ விசுவாசிக்கிறவர் இன்னார் என்று நீ அறிந்திருக்கிறாய். உன்னை நேசிக்கிற பரம பிதா, தம்முடைய ஒரே குமாரனான இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவையே உனக்காக ஒப்புக்கொடுத்தவர் – நீ அவரை அறிந்திருக்கிறாய். இன்னும் ஏன் துக்கத்தோடு இருக்கிறாய், என் இருதயமே? உன் எஜமானன் உன்னிடத்தில் ஒரு சின்ன காரியம் மாத்திரமே கேட்கிறார் – உன் இருதயத்தின் வேண்டுதல்களை அருள்செய்ய அவர் கேட்பதெல்லாம் ஒன்றே ஒன்று மாத்திரமே – நீ என்னில் மனமகிழ்ச்சியாயிரு.

ஓ, நீ கேட்பது புரிகிறது – என் சூழ்நிலைகள் காரிருள் சூழ்ந்திருக்கிறது; அடுத்த அடி என்ன செய்வது என்று கூட எனக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. இதில் நான் எப்படி கர்த்தரிடத்தில் மனமகிழ்ச்சியாயிருக்க முடியும் என்று கேட்கிறாய்? ஆனால், என் ஆத்துமமே, எப்போதிருந்து உன்னை சிருஷ்டித்த தேவனிடத்தில் நீ மனமகிழ்ச்சியாயிருக்க, சிருஷ்டிக்கப்பட்ட சூழ்நிலைகளும், மனிதர்களும் தடையாக இருக்க முடிந்தது? உன் மீட்பரும், இரட்சகருமாகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவை நோக்கி, எத்தனை முறை நீ அப்போஸ்தலனாகிய பேதுருவோடு சேர்ந்து சொல்லி இருக்கிறாய் – “ஆண்டவரே, நீர் எல்லாவற்றையும் அறிந்திருக்கிறீர்; நான் உம்மை நேசிக்கிறேன் என்பதையும் நீர் அறிவீர்.” மறந்து போனாயோ? பேதுருவோடு, அந்த கடற்கரையிலே நீயும் நின்று, உடைந்த உள்ளத்தோடு, கண்ணீர் ததும்பும் கண்களோடு, நெஞ்சம் விம்ம, நீ அந்த வார்த்தைகளை சொன்னதை நினைத்துப் பார். அந்த வார்த்தைகளை உண்மையாகத்தானே நீ சொன்னாய்? இப்போதும் அந்த தெய்வீக அன்பு உன்னை நிரப்பட்டும். கிறிஸ்துவின் கல்வாரி அன்பும், பரமபிதாவின் தந்தைக்குரிய அன்பும், பரிசுத்த ஆவியானவரின் பரிசுத்தமான அன்பும் உன்னை நிரப்பட்டும். அந்த அன்பினால் நீ அவரிடத்தில் மனமகிழ்ச்சியாயிருப்பாய்; அவர் உன் வேண்டுதல்களை உனக்கு அருளிச்செய்வார்.

Desires of my heart

Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalm 37:4 (NIV)

Oh, my heart! Why are you downcast? Are you feeling downcast because your future looks bleak? Or, deep inside you, my dear heart, are you worried that the Lord may not fulfil His promises to you? Are you wondering whether your desires will be satisfied?

Oh, my heart! You know that amidst all these unbelief and questions, you still believe in the miracle-working God; you believe in the LORD God Who is faithful to His promises. You know who you have believed – the loving Eternal Father, Who gave His only Son for you – you know that and you believe that. So, why are you downcast? Hasn’t your Master given a simple command to you, a very simple command to follow so that you can have the desires of your heart – delight yourself in Me. That’s all He is asking.

Oh, I understand. You are wondering when everything looks so dark and bleak, how can I delight in the Lord? But, my dear heart, when is your delight in the Lord dictated by the external circumstances? How many times you have told Jesus, your Saviour and your Redeemer, that confession Peter made… “Lord, You know all things and You know that I love You.” How many times when you said that, you were right there with Peter, with a broken heart, with eyes swelling up with tears, with a voice struggling to control your emotions? You meant those words, didn’t you? Now, tell those words again and let His love fill your heart and you will delight in Him. Yes, my dear heart, may your heart be filled with the love of God our Father, with the love of Jesus Christ, His only Son and with the love of the Holy Spirit. Delight in Him and He will give you the desires of your heart.

உண்மையுள்ள வாக்குத்தத்தம்

நான் உன்னைவிட்டு விலகுவதுமில்லை, உன்னைக் கைவிடுவதுமில்லை. – யோசுவா 1:5

எங்கள் பரலோக தகப்பனே! நாங்கள் உம்மை ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட நேரத்தில், அறியாதவர்களாய், திசை தெரியாதவர்களாய் இருந்தபோது, இந்த வாக்குறுதியை நீர் தந்தீர். உம்முடைய குமாரனும் எங்கள் இரட்சகருமான கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவுக்குள் நாங்கள் காலடி எடுத்து வந்தபோது, நான் உன்னைவிட்டு விலகமாட்டேன், உன்னைக் கைவிடவும் மாட்டேன் என்று எங்களுக்குச் சொன்னீர். இத்தனை வருடங்கள் கழித்து, நாங்கள் திரும்பிப் பார்க்கும்போது, நீர் உம்முடைய வார்த்தையில் எவ்வளவு உண்மையுள்ளவராய் இருக்கிறீர் என்பதை நினைத்து நாங்கள் சந்தோஷப்படுகிறோம்.

A faithful promise

I will never leave you nor forsake you. – Joshua 1:5 (NIV)

Oh our loving Father in Heaven! You gave this promise to us, when we were young and naive. When we took baby steps in Your Son and our Lord Jesus Christ, You promised never to leave us nor to forsake us. Years have passed by and when we turn back and look, we are amazed to see how truthful You are to Your promise. There were times when we were not faithful to You, Lord, but You have been always faithful to Your promise. There were times when we even forgot You, but, in Your divine love, You never forgot us and You never forgot this promise that You gave us. Till this day, till this very moment, You have never left us nor forsaken us.

Dear heavenly Father, help us to realize more of Your love, more of Your faithfulness and the surety of promises through our Saviour Jesus Christ. Help us to be rest assured in this promise and keep singing Your praises all the time. In the precious Name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.
